Base Oils-Carrier Oils

Base Oils:
A base oil is something which will "carry" the chosen essential oil through
the skin and into the bloodstream. Mineral Oils such as "baby oils" are
useless. Although the essential oils will dissolve in it, mineral oils have a
very low penetration property so it reduces the essential oils ability to
pass through the skin.
Certain vegetable oils are ideal. These oils should ideally be cold pressed.
Cold pressed oils are mechanically pressed from the seeds at low temperature,
usually below 80 degrees C. The oil is then filtered and bottled. This is the
only method of preserving the original goodness of the oils.

Massage=application to skin

Now to the oils
Almond, Sweet: excellent moisturising properties. A light polyunsaturated oil
excellent for all passage purposes - absorption rate approx 15 mins
Apricot kernel: a light textured oil ideal for massage and cosmetic purposes.
It makes a good base for the treatment of dry, mature, sensitive or inflamed
skins - absorption rate less than that of sweet almond
Avocado: this emerald green oil is rich in many nutrients, including vitamin
A & D, lecithin and potassium. The oil is a time tested skin soother and
softener. Avocado oil is very easily absorbed into the skin, it may be used
as a massage oil for dry and mature skin types
Evening Primrose: rich in gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a very important
essential fatty acid which is important for regulating many bodily functions.
The prostaglandins that are produced by the body from GLA help to regulate
and reduce menstrual problems, arthritis, menopause, eczema and other diseases
involving inflammation - very good for females.
Jojoba: its chemical composition is very similar to the skin's own oil,
sebum. Jojoba is ideal for those with sensitive complexion, or oily and acne
skin conditions that require delicate treatment. Jojoba is not susceptible to
oxidation, it is highly bacterial resistant and will not turn rancid, so it
has an extremely long shelf life. It is used extensively in cosmetics for
this purpose and because it does not cause any allergic reactions.
Macadamia: highly nourishing and emollient oil recommended for dray and mature
skin
Rosehip: been successfully used to reduce wrinkles and signs of premature
aging. it also helps to counter the drying effects of the sun and reduces the
redness or hyperpigmentation of scars, reducing keloid scar tissue and
loosening up fibrous chords.
Safflower: is one of the more economical vegetable oils to use in massage
therapy - it has a short shelf life
Soybean: excellent source of vitamin E, can be used for all skin types
Sesame Seed: high in vitamin E & B vitamins and the minerals calcium,
magnesium and phosphorus. oil is used as a natural moisturiser.
Wheatgerm: extremely valuable source of vitamin E & essential fatty acids. It
is often used as an anti-oxidant. Approx 5% wheatgerm oil should be added to
all blends for this reason.
