Your Sun Sign And Your Dharma
Your Sun Sign And Your Dharma
By Skye Alexander, Copyright 1999
I like to think of the Sun as the symbol of the "present you," the individual you are right now, in this lifetime. You could also view the Sun as representing your dharma, or your "role" in life. (Dharma is a Buddhist concept that means your divine duty). Your Sun sign describes the essential and distinctly unique part of yourself that you aspire toward, the part you are striving to express and fulfill, the part for which you want to be recognized. It is your kernel of selfhood.
In fact, if someone were to ask you what you want to be (not do) in life or how you want others to view you, you might quickly describe yourself in terms of your Sun. An individual with the Sun in Leo, for example, might say she wants to be a leader, a figure who commands authority and respect. Someone with the Sun in Pisces might respond that he wants to be a compassionate, caring, creative person. The Sun also shows the part of yourself that you generally like and accept, flaws and all.
Aries
Your role in this lifetime is that of the pioneer, the explorer, the adventurer who forges ahead into uncharted territory. Perhaps you see yourself as a knight on a white horse or an astronaut speeding into space to discover the vast unknown. Like the military pilots depicted in Tom Wolfe's book "The Right Stuff," you like to "push the envelope" and thrive on danger.
Easily bored, you constantly seek new challenges. You have great energy and enthusiasm, but lack persistence. Once something becomes routine, you lose interest and go off in search of new dragons to slay. As a result, you are much better at starting things than finishing them.
Aries is the most individualistic and independent sign, and those of you born under it are inherently self-oriented. Often you have difficulty relating to other people or understanding their side of things--as far as you're concerned, there is only one way to do something, and that's your way. You attempt to do everything yourself and are able to accomplish more than most people. When you run up against a problem you can't handle alone, however, you don't know where to turn for help.
Because your dharma is to break new ground, you must separate yourself from traditions, social conventions, and accepted norms. In doing so, you are likely to antagonize or upset people who are more orthodox than you. You'll probably end up butting heads with authority figures occasionally and may make as many enemies as friends. You cannot worry about what others think of you, for doing so would inhibit your headlong charge down the road less traveled.
Taurus
Your role in life is to bring the dreams of others to fruition. You have the ability to put other people's plans into action and bring the visionary's grand ideas down to earth. You are the builder who carries out the architect's designs. Patience and perseverance are your strong suits, and once you start something you rarely deviate from your path until you've reached your destination.
However, this single-minded determination can sometimes cause you to miss out on opportunities or become stuck in a rut, for you are reluctant to try something new even when it would benefit you to do so. As a result, you tend to accept conditions as they are rather than attempting to change them.
Good-natured and easygoing, it takes a lot to make you angry. You enjoy companionship and are at your best in social situations. To those you care about, you are loyal and generous to a fault. You also need other people to motivate you, for alone you are inclined to be rather lazy and plodding.
Taurus is the most sensual and materialistic sign of the zodiac, and those of you born under it have a great appreciation of physical pleasure. Your indulgence and love of beauty can lead you to overextend yourself financially, and you may put too much emphasis on money. Your self-worth may even be tied to your income.
Because your dharma is to create forms and make concepts manifest in the physical world, your focus is necessarily "earth-bound." Abstractions escape you. Your focus is on things that can be rendered materially, and your imagination is firmly rooted in the physical plane. If you can't wear it, eat it, sit on it, or smell it, what good is it?
Gemini
Your role in life is to gather and disseminate information. Thus, you are constantly in search of knowledge, facts, data, trivia, and gossip—everything is potential grist for your mental mill. You see friends, coworkers, and loved ones as sources for new information. Infinitely curious, you gather ideas like a child picking up seashells at the beach and store them away for some future time when they may come in handy. You might be an avid reader, a media junkie, or a lifelong student. One of your biggest problems, however, is distinguishing between the treasures and the trash.
Your mind requires constant stimulation and challenges. Nothing excites you more than learning something new. Curious and versatile, you can do a great many things at least passingly well, but your short attention span makes it challenging for you to stick with anything long enough to become proficient at it. You are truly a jack of all trades.
Your insatiable curiosity can lead you to attempt more than you can possibly accomplish. Afraid of missing out on something, you try to do too much and may either exhaust yourself or fail to complete what you begin. Many of you work two jobs simultaneously, not only to earn additional money, but because you can't decide between the two of them. Geminis are also quite capable of carrying on more than one love relationship at a time.
Your dharma is to collect and share information, much like a bee that gathers and spreads pollen, flying from flower to flower. In a positive sense, this desire to acquire knowledge and educate the world, as well as yourself, makes you a natural teacher; negatively, it manifests as gossiping and nosiness. Your role is to disseminate ideas, not to evaluate them.
Cancer
You have a compassionate, nurturing nature and are at your best when you can care for and shelter someone else. However, you must guard against being overly protective and controlling toward people in your care. You might be inclined to adopt a "benevolent dictator" attitude, believing that you know what's best for everyone, without allowing them any room for individuality.
Highly emotional and sensitive, you can be somewhat moody, and your moods may be linked to the phases of the Moon. You are also able to sense the emotions of others and might be easily influenced by people to whom you are close. As a result, you can't really separate yourself from the world around you, no matter how hard you try.
Security is all-important to you. Belonging to something larger than yourself gives you a sense of security, and you might define yourself through your family, community, workplace, ethnic or religious group, or country. Many of you also see money as security. Respectful of authority and hierarchy, you are loyal to family members, employers, and whoever is on "your side." However, different opinions or lifestyles can upset your sense of security. Consequently, you might surround yourself with people you find non-threatening, who are just like yourself, and who are supportive of you.
Your dharma is to use your sensitivity to care for the needs of others and to build a safe, stable environment in which other people's children, as well as your own, can grow and thrive. But you must learn to give freely, to offer care and support to others without attaching strings to your gifts.
Leo
Like your ruler, the Sun, you see yourself as the center of your own personal universe. You imagine yourself showering those around you with life-giving warmth and expect them to turn toward you like flowers turning toward the Sun. Your role is that of king, queen, or leader, and you assume this position as though it were your divine right, believing that others should naturally follow you. Often they do, simply because you project such confidence and enthusiasm.
You have difficulty seeing other people except in terms of their value to you. To those who are loyal and devoted to you, you are generous and affectionate, but anyone who questions your authority or expects you to prove yourself worthy will experience your self-righteous wrath.
It is essential for you to be creative, to express yourself in some special and distinctive way. You believe you have a gift to share with the world--and that gift is yourself. You love attention and are happiest when you can bask in the adoration of your "fans." Some of you will express yourself through the arts, leaving behind paintings, symphonies, books, or buildings as your legacy. Some of you consider your children to be an expression of your creativity.
Your dharma is to rule not only courageously, but also fairly, whether you are the head of state or the head of a business. Self-assurance and charisma, qualities we often associate with royalty, come easily to you. Fairness and equality, which are more often associated with your opposite sign, Aquarius, do not. In your haste to be Number One, remember that all rulers depend on their subjects, and all CEO's depend on their employees. One cannot exist without the other.
Virgo
The practical idealist, you want to put your concern for those less fortunate than yourself (including animals) into a pragmatic framework. Your role is to help them to help themselves. A "fixer," you'll try to fix anything from a broken garbage disposal to a broken leg. You enjoy being of service, knowing that you've done something worthwhile. Glory and money aren't particularly important to you, but you must feel useful and needed.
You are hardworking, meticulous, cautious, and analytical in all you do. Order and organization are important to you--you're the person who keeps things running smoothly. You want to know what's expected of you, and you like to have the rules of the game clearly stated so you can follow them to the letter. Diligent and conscientious, you always strive to do your best and can be depended on to get things done in a pinch.
A perfectionist, you want everything to be "just so" and are always trying to improve yourself and everyone else around you. You need to know when to quit, however, before you grind the diamond into dust!
Modest and unassuming, you dislike having attention focused on you and prefer to remain in the background. You are more conformable following than leading and are well-suited to carrying out other people's grand plans. No matter how gifted or accomplished you may be, however, you are humble and want to be seen as just another ordinary person.
Your dharma might go something like the "Serenity Prayer": perfect what you can, accept what you can't improve, and learn to distinguish between the two.
Libra
Libra's symbol is the balance, and you are continually trying to maintain balance in all you do. Conflict and stress of any kind upset you, and you'll go to great lengths to avoid confrontation. You're a lover, not a fighter. You go along to get along, but may give in too quickly, sacrificing your principles or self-interest in the process. Your dharma is to be the peacemaker who weighs issues dispassionately, mediates disputes, and creates harmony out of chaos.
Known for your good manners and pleasant demeanor, you are at your best in social situations or positions that demand tact and savoir faire. You are neat and orderly in all you do, since appearances are important to you. Tactful, friendly, and even-tempered, you always make a good impression and can get along with just about anyone. Relationships are your main concern, and you function best as a member of a team or partnership.
You want everyone to like you and are easily influenced by other people's opinions. Often you take on the coloring of those around you. Afraid to stand out or be different, you are quite conventional and generally adapt to the status quo, rarely questioning what's expected of you. You are respectful of authority and traditions and don't buck the system.
Although you may be concerned with fairness, it's more important to you to play by the rules. Your challenge is to compromise and cooperate without sacrificing yourself or your principles in the process.
Scorpio
Life for you, Scorpio, is never simple, ordinary, or placid. Rather, it seems marked by intense, dramatic events and transformative situations that force you to rely on yourself from an early age.
An extremist, you don't do anything halfway. Stubborn and determined, you are not easily deterred from your goals and through sheer force of will you often accomplish them. You are a formidable adversary and a good person to have as an ally when the going gets tough. However, your tenacity can make you a difficult person to get along with.
Extremely sensitive and emotional, you hide your vulnerability behind an impenetrable wall. Because you fear being hurt, you may strike first and ask questions later. Under pressure, you appear contained and unflappable, and your acerbic wit can put opponents on the defensive.
You want to be in complete control at all times. Because you don't fully trust anyone else, you rarely share information with others. Privacy is important to you, and you'd like to classify your life "top secret." You want to know everything about everyone else, but reveal little about yourself.
Intuitive, you see into other people and understand their motives, though you often look on the dark side and expect the worst of people. Whether you are truly psychic or just perceptive, you are rarely duped. You probe beneath the surface to uncover what lies hidden from view, whether you're a detective investigating a crime or a psychotherapist probing a patient's unconscious.
You possess great personal magnetism and an aura of power that enables you to transform people, for better or worse. Though you may not seek the limelight, you can be a charismatic and forceful leader. Your dharma is to use your power toward constructive rather than destructive ends.
Sagittarius
Jovial, outgoing, and optimistic, you see life as a game and have a good time playing it. You expect to "win a few, lose a few," so you don't let failure get you down; instead, you move on to the next adventure, full of enthusiasm and confidence. Your self-confidence often helps you achieve your objectives. Even when you fail, people find it hard to blame you or stay mad at you for long.
Many of you possess a quick wit and a delightful sense of humor. Your smooth-talking style and engaging personality enable you to convince others to join your team or back you in your endeavors, no matter how outrageous. A big dreamer, you tend to overestimate your abilities and spread yourself too thin. As a result, your grandiose schemes--if they do come to fruition--are often late and over-budget. Always looking to the future, you quickly forget about the past and rarely learn from your mistakes. Although you never intend to hurt anyone, others may see you as unreliable.
Both physically and mentally active, you need plenty of room to move about, or you grow restless and bored. Frequent changes of scene are essential to you, and you balk at restrictions. You want to expand your horizons in every direction and are interested in anything foreign. Immensely curious, your desire to learn a little bit about everything, in this world as well as the next, could lead you to travel to foreign countries or explore spiritual realms of consciousness. Many of you have active fantasy lives that let you create your own magickal worlds.
Your dharma is to use your vision and curiosity to explore the great beyond, without forgetting your responsibilities in the here and now.
Capricorn
You are pragmatic, determined, and cautious in your approach to life. Although you don't shy away from challenges, you always examine the pitfalls as well as the advantages of a situation before you go ahead. You take only carefully calculated risks. Consequently, you rarely make big mistakes, though you might miss out on opportunities because you are too cautious.
Conservative in your personal and professional pursuits, you prefer to stay with what you know rather than experimenting with the new or unusual. Things that have stood the test of time appeal to you. You respect tradition and are most comfortable in clearly defined hierarchical situations and relationships. Shy and sensitive, you aren't particularly good at socializing. Because you are uncomfortable with personal relationships, you may attempt to avoid them by throwing yourself into your work.
You possess managerial skills, common sense, financial acumen, and organizational ability. Not especially innovative, you have a knack for ironing out the kinks and for making things run efficiently. Your strengths are pragmatism, planning, and perseverance. You carefully prepare for the future and don't trust luck to see you through.
Your success will come through your own efforts, most likely. Rather than relying on others to help you, you must earn your own way and make progress slowly and steadily. This doesn't bother you, however--you aren't looking for a free ride and expect to encounter a few difficulties along the way.
Your dharma is to confront life's obstacles, learn from them, and overcome them, without letting them limit you. Work hard and accept your responsibilities, but don't sacrifice joy in the process.
Aquarius
Aquarians march to the beat of a different drummer, and you demand the freedom to think and act in your own way. You're never afraid to take an unpopular stand or try an unusual approach. You believe that if something has always been done a particular way, it's time for a change. Ever in pursuit of new experiences, you don't mind controversy or turmoil.
A rebel who points out "the system's" failings, you feel it is your responsibility to oppose the establishment. As a result, you often end up in trouble with the powers that be. Explosive and outspoken, you rarely hold your tongue and can be abrasive or tactless. You need to guard against tearing down old structures before you have a better alternative to offer in their place.
Fairness and equality are important to you, and you'd like to erase all barriers related to race, gender, age, or creed. You don't respect people for their money or position and treat the mailroom clerk and the company president identically. Gregarious, you enjoy sharing ideas with intelligent, forward-thinking people and function best when you can be part of a group, especially when that group is dedicated to a cause. You aren't particularly good in emotional situations, however, and can be rather impersonal in relationships.
Progressive and unconventional, you are usually ahead of your time and can awaken other people to new discoveries. Often you can be found on the cutting edge of technology or in the vanguard of social change.
Changeable, idiosyncratic, and idealistic, you may lack the patience and perseverance to bring your dreams to fruition. It's not enough for you to see the future--you must make it understandable and viable for the masses. Your dharma is to implement constructive changes that will benefit all, without rejecting the wisdom of the past in the process.
Pisces
Pisceans possess vivid imaginations and fantasy lives. Many of you are artistic or creative and seem to hear "the music of the spheres." You have a keen sensitivity to color and sound, and even if you aren't particularly talented you enjoy art, music, and beauty.
Dealing with the harsh realities of earthly life is extremely difficult for you. You are seeking a more spiritual and lofty existence and aren't at home in the physical world. Your concerns are of a higher nature, and you may overlook the mundane world around you. At your best, you are able to tune in to higher realms of consciousness to gain inspiration. At your worst, you are lost in a fog, more concerned with the hereafter than the here and now. Your dharma is to bring the wonders of the spiritual realm to earth. In all you do, you expect yourself to be perfect. Overly idealistic, you become easily discouraged when things don't turn out as you'd hoped. Because you lack discipline and perseverance, you might not finish what you start. When things get rough, you might run away rather than working your problems through.
Very sensitive to other people's moods and feelings, you are able to empathize with the troubles of others--but you are also strongly influenced by them. Many of you possess some psychic ability. You have great sympathy for the helpless, the injured, and the unfortunate, human and animal alike. However, you must guard against sacrificing your own best interests. Trusting, compassionate, and extremely gullible, you sometimes allow others to take advantage of you. One of your challenges in this lifetime is to learn to give of yourself without giving yourself away.
