Humankind made the discovery of fire somewhere between
250,000 and 500,000 years ago. We learned and evolved into a species determined to harness the energy and power of the flame. Through the ages, it was the Witches and Mages that studied the properties of fire and wax. The candle dates back to some unrecorded time before the Greek City States. Candles were lit and their light used to illuminate the altars of the Gods and Goddesses of the Old World.
Today candles are used in modern ritual work, but are so often given a passive role. Few practitioners know the true powers of the candle and many only use it as a light source. The power of the candle can greatly enhance your magical workings. When you use candle magic, you are initiating change in the Universe, being either constructive or destructive in nature. The universal energies are themselves neutral, and are therefore neither good nor bad. How you use your magic will shape the type of energy that is rendered in the end.
Always remember the rules of Karma and work your spells in a positive light. The rule of three should always be followed, especially when dealing with candles and the fire elementals. It is said that matter is neither created nor destroyed, but constantly sped up, slowed down, reshaped and broken apart again. To use your psychic potential, and visualize the energy in your mind, is to take control of that energy. Candle Magick You can use any type of candles for candle magick, beeswax candles are the best though, as they are completely natural. (Better still, try making your own candles, that way you can create and charge a candle with your own energy for a desired spell).
To prepare for the spell, set up your altar, and take a relaxing bath, clear your mind and focus on the spell you are about to perform. Cleanse and consecrate the candle you will use, this is very important, you want to get rid of any energies it may have picked up. This is usually done by submerging the candle in salt and asking the God/Goddess to bless it.
The next step is to dress your candle, this is done by rubbing the oil specified in the spell on the candle. You should be very careful how you rub the oil, remember that to bring something to you, you should rub the oil from the top of the candle to the middle, and from the bottom to the middle. If you want to drive something away from you, rub from the middle to the top and the middle to the bottom. Never rub the oil in both directions, doing that defeats the purpose.

White: purity, sincerity, protection. Black: protection, repelling, binding, absorption. Silver: divination, astral protection, Goddess. Candle Divination Lychnomancy
This is divination from the flames of three wax candles. Arrange the three candles in an equilateral triangle and light a fourth candle some distance away to provide enough light for the reading. Switch off all the other lights in the room, and light the three candles from one match. Read the omens from the appearence of their flames.
A flame wavering from side to side : Travel.
One flame brighter than all the others : Great success.
A glow or radiance at the tip of the wick : Prosperity.
Sparks : Be cautious
Rising and falling flames, or candles burning unevenly : Danger.
Flame spluttering : Disappointment.

Lithomancy
This is divination using precious stones, one form of which involves candlelight. Scatter gemstones of different colours around a candle. Darken the room, light the candle, close your eyes and clear your mind of thoughts. when you open your eyes, notice which colour of stone first reflects light back on you. (In the absence of a good selection of gems, coloured glass can be used as an alternative.
Colourless : Success and happiness.
Red : Romance.
Dark red : A wedding.
Yellow : Infidelity.
Green : A wish will come true.
Turquoise : An unexpected opportunity.

To know if your lover is true
Take two halves of a walnut shell, two small candles or wax matches and a bowl of water. Stand a candle upright in each half of the walnut shells, fixing it into place with a little melted wax. Set the walnut shell boats in the middle of the bowl of water, naming one candle for yourself, and the other for your lover. Light the candles. If the two boats float side by side witht the candles burning evenly, you will be true to each other. If the boats drift apart, overturn or the flame goes out, the relationship is doomed. If your candle burns for longer than that named for your lover, then you love more than you are loved, and vice versa.
To know your luck for the next year
Arrange 12 lighted candles in a large circle on a wood or concrete floor, having first removed any furnishings that might catch fire. Name a candle in turn for each month of the year. Beginning at the January candle, jump over each in turn until you have completed the circle. Any candle knocked over or extinguished signifies bad luck for that particular month; a candle still burning indicates good luck.
