July Moon

July is the 7th month in the year. We have changed to Summer. July is the first step in the South part of the Rainbow Medicine Wheel. July is the first month in the Emotion section of the Wheel. It is a time of emotions. A time of the young one (teen years). The colors of this month are bold ones because the month time is a physical time of the wheel and that makes the colors bold.

Creativity, Vision and Purpose

July is a month of extraordinary creativity.

Fruits and flowers take an abundance of forms.

The eggs of bluebirds hatch, leaving tiny shells the color of sky

beneath nests noisy with the cry of hungry young.

This cycle of hatching and maturation beings us into

heightened awareness of our own life purpose,

the gifts we have been given to share with the Sacred Circle of Life.

In exploring our life purpose this month,

we will also explore the attitude with which we work,

for when our activities are dedicated to the good of all,

creativity flourishes, the energy of mind and body flow freely,

and we share the joy of our essence as a

blessing to this world.

By following our intuition this month, we will learn to tune in to

the messages from the Higher Self

and from the angelic realm

that help us find our way with the joy, delight and levity that

make life worthwhile.

Listen to the voices of the Ancient Ones singing from the trees:

The Godseed within

is coming to flower in the

radiant light of summer.

Listening to the voice of intuition

we realize life's purpose,

using our gifts with joy

in the service of

all beings.

July's full moon is known as the Blessing Moon, although it's also called the Meadow Moon. July was originally called Quintilus, but was later renamed in honor of Julius Caesar.

Also called: Hay Moon, Wort Moon, Moon of Claiming, Moon of Blood (because of

mosquitoes), Blessing Moon, Maedmonat (Meadow Month), Hewimanoth (Hay Month)

Fallow Moon, Buck Moon, Thunder Moon.

Correspondences:

Colors: Green, silver, blue-gray

Gemstones: Moonstone, white agate, opals or pearls

Trees: Ash and oak

Gods: Juno, Venus, Cerridwen, Athena, Nephthys, Lugh

Herbs: Mugwort, hyssop, lemon balm

Element: Water

This is a great time to do divination and dreamwork. Find a way to incorporate the watery energy of the Blessing Moon into your spell crafting and ritual. Enjoy the relaxing feeling of July's full moon and use it in your personal meditation.

Old Sayings & Lore

If the New Moon is seen for the first time straight ahead, it predicts good

fortune until the next New Moon.

If there are two Moons (two New or two Full) in the same month, the weather

will be unfavorable and unsettled until the next New Moon.

If you suffer from corns, cut them during the waning Moon and they will

disappear for good.

Wood cut at the New Moon is hard to split. If it is cut at the Full Moon it

is easy to split.

Grass crops should be sown at the Full Moon. Then the hay will dry quickly.

In Wales, fishermen avoid the Moon line, or the moonlight showing on the water, when setting out to sea; they consider crossing this bad luck. However, in other areas they say to make a wish when crossing the Moon line.

Myths

Athene and Pallas

The goddess Athene, who was born from the head of Zeus after he swallowed

her pregnant mother, was an all-powerful and wise warrior deity. The

Parthenin (Virgin Temple) was her shrine in Athens. Athene wore a helmet and

aegis (breastplate) and carried a shield and spear. However, this goddess

abhorred senseless violence. Perhaps this was because of the tragic accident

that heppened to her closest friend.

Athene had a female human friend and lover whose name was Pallas. Pallas

enjoyed hunting and sports, much as did Athene. They would debate issues,

the goddess giving the gods' side, Pallas defending the humans. Athene never

felt threatened by the abilities of this human companion but loved her

dearly. Then one day, while out taking part in the Amazon games, Pallas fell

from a steep cliff and was killed. Athene's sorrow for her lost friend was

so great that the goddess adopted the name Pallas as part of her own name.

Athene became the deity of women's rights and freedom, as well as patroness

of all crafts, soldiers, wisdom, and the horse. She was celebrated

especially at the Lesser Panathenaea in March and again on the Day of the

Geniae on December 25.

The Birth of Isis and Nephthys

When the Great God Ra abdicated his throne, he left it to his son Shu, who

in turn yielded the throne to his children, Seb and Nut. Now these two

children married, although they had been forbidden by Ra to do so; they

spent so much time copulating that Ra finally orderd Shu to forcefully

separate them. Ra also declared that the pregnant sky goddess Nut could not

give birth in any month of the year.

The great and wise god Thoth felt sorry for Nut and decided to help her. He

played draughts with Selene the Moon and won enough light to make five extra

days for each year. Since these days did not belong on the regular Egyptian

calendar of 360, Nut was able to give birth. These children were: Osiris,

Haroeris, Set, Isis, and Nephthys.(1) These holy five days of birth became

the inbetween times: the time when the old year ended and the new year began

for the Egyptians.

Isis and Nephthys were opposite aspects of the same power. Isis was the

Queen of the Living, the wife of Osiris and mother of Horus, the goddess of

the Full Moon. Nephthys was the Dark Mother, Queen of the Dead, mistress of

Osiris and mother of Anubis, the goddess of the Dark Moon. Both had great

magickal powers which complimented each other.

Thoth, who was considered self-begotten and self-produced, was honored at

his chief festival a few days after the Full Moon at the beginning of the

Egyptian year.

Neptune/Poseidon

The Titan Cronus and his sister Rhea had six children: Hestia, Demeter, Hera

Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus. After Zeus liberated his swallowed siblings, he

divided the kingdom with his brothers. Zeus took the heavens and Olympus,

Hades the Underworld, Poseidon chose to make his realm in the Earth's oceans

and seas. Poseidon, however, always desired to expand his kingdom and was

often in contention with Zeus over land. He never completely won and had to

settle for only part of what he wanted.

His wife was the nereid Amphitrite, daughter of the Titan Oceanus. He drove a chariot pulled by Tritans blowing conch horns; tridents, bulls, and horses were his symbols. He had the power to summon monsters from the depths of the ocean to avenge himself on humans, and did so on several occasions. Poseidon was also called Earth-Shaker, a reference to his power to produce earthquakes. A turbulent and independent god, he used his trident to stir the seas into terrible storms. Since earthquakes were a frequent part of Mediterranean life, Poseidon/Neptune was honored with special festivals.
