Candle Magick

The dancing flames of candles have been used as a Witches' tool for
centuries. By setting the proper atmosphere, candles are used to help
increase a spell's power, or to influence a particular power. Candles
absorb one's personal energy and release this energy when burned Candle
colour is very important when performing magick, for each colour emits a
particular vibration and attracts certain influences. The following list
is meant to be used as a guide in choosing a candle colour for your
personal use. Please remember that colour is another "tool" and you need
choose what works best for you in your magickal workings. If you do not
have the colour mentioned for a particular need, allow your intuition
and the Goddess guide you in choosing one for your purposes.

The candles you use should be ones you yourself make out of beeswax,
using natural dyes and essential oils, if desired. Beeswax sheets are
available at most hobby stores, and are a fast and easy way to make your
own candles at home. I can't always make candles out of beeswax though, or
when I don't have the time and for spellwork I like to use these small candles
like these pictured below

Prior to using any candle in your
workings you should cleanse the candle and anoint it with a small amount
of oil during the waxing phase of the moon. This consecrates the candle
and charges it with magickal energy. You can also carve or paint
appropriate magickal symbols onto your candles, to further empower the
candles with those energies. The heated tip of your athame works well
for this purpose. It is best to use one candle per ritual or spell, and
to not use a candle that has been used previously for another purpose.
It is also best to allow the candle to burn out by itself, as blowing it
out may disperse the energy contained within.

WHITE:
A balance of all colours. Symbolizes peace, purity , innocence and power
of a higher nature. Promotes peace, tranquillity, purification; truth,
spirituality, and sincerity. Also used for meditation, truth seeking,
spiritual enlightenment, summoning spirit guides, astral travel, and to
enhance psychic abilities. Can be as protective as black and may be
substituted for any colour candle. Healing properties include treating
broken bones, relieving dental pain and increasing milk production in
nursing mothers. White is also a Goddess symbol.

YELLOW:
A stimulating and uplifting colour that is the colour of creativity;
intelligence, confidence; movement and energy. Connects to clairvoyance,
divination, wisdom, learning; imagination, and inspiration as well as
the power of concentration and communication. Used in healing skin
conditions as well as stomach complaints and menstrual cramps. Yellow
symbolizes the element of Air.

ORANGE:
Is a stimulating and energizing colour. It connects to attraction,
stimulation, control, personal strength, authority, and power. Also
encouragement, adaptability, luck, and sudden changes. It attracts the
characteristics wanted from other tools, spells and rituals. Very good
for healing coughs, colds and asthma as well as arthritis and
exhaustion.

GOLD:
Colour that promotes understanding and attracts the powers of cosmic
influences; intuition, persuasion, charm and confidence. Beneficial in
rituals intended to bring about fast luck or financial benefits, or in
rituals honouring solar deities. Color that represents the GODS

PINK / ROSE:
A positive colour symbolic of emotional love, nurturing relationships
and romance. Promotes spiritual awakening, healing of the spirit,
femininity, friendships, honor and morality. It is the standard colour
of rituals to draw affections and brings friendly, lively conversation
to the dinner table. Excellent for treating anxiety and depression, as
well as ailments of the heart.

RED:
The fiery, invigorating colour of energy and life. Always connected to
blood, birth and death; and sex. Connects with love, passion, fertility,
physical energy and strength. Increases magnetism in rituals and is used
in defensive magick. Also emotes courage and enthusiasm. Good in health,
strength and vigor spells and defensive magick. Used in healing
neuralgias and exhaustion. Red symbolizes the element of Fire as well as
being a God Symbol.

PURPLE/VIOLET:
Vibrating colour that is highly spiritual and traditionally connected to
mysticism, inspiration, wisdom, idealism, purification; success, peace;
and power. Aids in meditation, sensitivity and higher psychic talents;
as well as connecting to idealism, ambition, power, success and
household protection. Healing properties include the treatment of
allergies, sleep disorders and stress-related disorders.

MAGENTA:
A combination of red and violet that is a very high vibrational
frequency that tends to work fast. This colour energizes rituals where
immediate action and high levels of power or spiritual healing are
required, such as quick changes, exorcism or spiritual healing.

BROWN:
An earthy, balanced colour, used to attract money and financial success.
It aids in emotional stability and balance, eliminates indecisiveness,
improves powers of concentration, study, intuition, and telepathy. Also
connects also to finding lost objects. Aids in the protection of
familiars and household pets as well as animal healing.

INDIGO:
A vitalizing colour of inertia; used to cleanse the spirit and remove
fear. Used in rituals that require a deep meditative state, to
neutralize another's magick, or to counteract negative energy. Healing
properties include dementia, depression, and mental disorders.

BLUE:
A cool colour that soothes and relaxes. Blue is a primary spiritual
colour, used in rituals to obtain wisdom, tranquillity, harmony, peace,
inner light and truth. Connects to inspiration, occult power,
protection, understanding, good health, patience and loyalty. Aids in
meditation as it connects to intellect and mind. Promotes happiness,
laughter and joviality. Used in treating insomnia, high blood pressure,
and minor wounds. Blue symbolizes the element of Water.

GREEN:
The colour that connects to nature, fertility, and rejuvenation.
Stimulates work involving financial issues and money; aids good fortune,
prosperity, luck; ambition and success. Bringer of love and renewal, it
is an emotional soother and balancer, used to counteract greed and
jealousy. A good colour for treating headaches, colds and nervousness.
Green is the colour of the Earth element and is a Goddess Symbol.

SILVER / GRAY:
Neutral colour that removes negative energy or influences and encourages
stability. Useful when pondering complex issues during meditation and in
magic, this colour often sparks confusion; it also negates or
neutralizes when needed. Helps develop psychic abilities and attracts
the influence of the Goddess.

BLACK:
Burned for positive purposes, this colour opens up the deeper levels of
the unconscious. Black is used in rituals to induce a deep meditational
state and is good for banishing evil or negativity. Connects to self
control, quiet power, and resilience, as it absorbs negativity and
destroys it; offers strength and support in spells; protects from
retribution and is also an aid during loss.

To Change the Color of Flame:

For Candles: add the chemicals to the wax, or soak the wicks in a
solution of the chemicals using the following recipe.

To Add to a Fire: Put three level spoons of the chemical into a paper
cup; fill 1/2 full with water and stir. Soak several small chips of wood
in this solution overnight. The next day, remove the chips with tweezers
and lay on newspaper to dry. They can now be added to the flames to
produce
bright colors.

Green flame: Borax or Boric acid, copper nitrates or barium nitrates

Orange flame: calcium chloride

Red flame: stronium nitrate

Yellow flame: Sodium Chlorate or Potassium Nitrate

Purple flame: Lithium Chlorate

Color Magick Color is one of the most important influences around us,
both in our everyday lives and in our magickal/ritualistic practices.
Whether
we realize it or not, the colors around us affect our emotions and
thoughts.
That concept is even expressed in our own English language (ever felt
blue?, or
are your finances in the red or in the black?).  Therefore, it is
vitally
important to fully understand  and learn to work with color in both our
"normal"
and "magickal" areas of life.

First things, first--here is a list and brief summary of colors and
their accepted meanings:

Light blue....................peacefullness, tranquility, patience,
understanding

Dark blue.....................impulsiveness, depression

Royal blue....................Confidence, psychic abilities,
spiritual strength

White............................purity, truth, positive energy

Red..............................physical strength, courage,
sexual love, anger

Green............................finance, fertility, growth,
health, luck

Gold or yellow...................sun, attraction,the home,
friendship,wealth

Brown............................the earth, neutrality,
hesitation

Pink...............................honor, love,morality, the
heart

Black.............................mysteries, unconscious mind,
loss, banishment

Purple............................spiritual growth, abstinence,
enlightenment

Silver/grey.....................psychic protection, the moon,
neutrality

Orange...........................home, encouragement, attraction

Greenish yellow......................sickness, cowardice, discord

Applications:

There are some people that are so into one color or another, they have
trouble relating to the other colors.  It is vitally important to become
in attunement with the various colors of the rainbow.  There must be an
emotional connection between you and the work you are about to do,
whether
it is an actual spell or a meditation--that is a large part of where the
energy comes from to accomplish the work you are engaged in.  So here is
a
technique to get in"touch"  with the various colors:

Gather together a group of crystals/stones,with the colors you are
seeking to connect with--carry that stone with you 24 hours a day--eat
with it,
sleep with it, even take a bath with it!  Meditate on the color and the
stone
every morning and every night, spending at least one week with each
color, absorbing into your consciousness the meaning and essence of that
color.

If a color gives you a different definition as to what it represents to
you, then follow your intuition.  Get to know each color in as much
detail
and depth as you can imagine.   I do know that this technique works--it
helped me as well as others I have talked to.

Surroundings:

Look around your home--which room do you feel most comfortable in? Which
is the most uncomfortable?  Notice which color is the most dominant in
each
of those rooms.  Look at the clothes in your closet and drawers--which
color is the most prevalent?  I'll guarantee you will see at least one
color
that stands out!

Your feelings and reactions towards these colors will reveal to you
which color is your subconscious' most favorable and most unfavorable.
Change
the color in one of the rooms that you are uncomfortable in to one that
you
really like and resonate with--notice the change within yourself that
you feel.  Apply this technique of changing colors in every area of your
life where it is applicable--within a very short time, you will find
that
your energy levels have increased, you feel more positive, and you will
have
more stability and peace within yourself.

Magickal uses:

Just as you will find out through meditation and trial and error just
which colors you resonate with best, the next step, after proper
preparation,
takes you into the realm of applying that resonance in your
magickal/ritualistic workings.  By now, you should be getting
comfortable
with
the different colors and what they mean to you.  Your surroundings
should
also
be rearranged by now (as far as color is concerned) to be more relaxing
and
compatible with your own energies/emotions/psyche.

Once you have achieved this resonance, and you are able to understand
what each color represents and how those colors affect you, then you
will
be
better able to apply the uses of those colors in your magickal workings
as well.  It is important to take your time--don't get in a hurry, learn
and connect with each of the colors until you know and understand them
as
well as you do your own name.

Now prepare to experience the colors as never before!

Meditation:

Prepare the room in which you are about to meditate.  Make sure you will
not be disturbed-phone off the hook, door locked, etc.  Light two white
candles (and be sure to place them where they won't be knocked over or
be
too
close to something flammable--a raging fire will NOT be conducive to
your

meditation!).  Choose several more of different colors, such as blue,
red, and gold, and light them as well.  Light some incense, if you wish,
and
have some very soft music playing in the background (I prefer Native
American
flutes,myself).  Get comfortable, in your favorite position.

As you relax, see a white globe of pulsing energy beginning to form
around you, completely encircling you.  Hear a low hum of power
emanating
from
this globe of pure, white light.  As the globe begins to slowly spin in
a

clockwise direction, see a mirror-like finish on the outside of the
globe.

Envision this globe drawing power from the very Earth, pulsing strong
and steady.  You have just created your first circle of protection!
This

silver/white globe will contain any positive energy you raise and
protect you from any outside negative energies.  Practice "casting" this
circl/globe until it becomes effortless.

Now, expand the globe to include the candles, and the whole room.  As
the globe encircles the candles, see their colors begin to fill the
inside
of your globe, like sparkling rays of sunlight in rainbow colors
surrounding you.  Begin to FEEL the colors--are they hot, or cold, or
soft?  As
you become surrounded by these colors, begin to breathe them into
yourself.
Feel each color distinctly as you inhale, experiencing each one in turn,
and
find yourself BECOMING that color, radiating each one like a rainbow
star.
Do this for as long as you can, not forcing it, just allowing each color
to
be fully experienced. When you feel as though you have experienced each
color as deeply as you can, breathe them out, slowly releasing them.
See
the
colors returning into the candles, being reabsorbed by the flames.
Breathe
deep and slow, remaining relaxed throughout.

Now, slowly draw the silver/white globe closer around you, hearing the
hum becoming quieter, as you begin to release the energy back into the
Earth. See the globe begin to dissipate, as it gradually fades away into
nothingness.  Take several slow, deep breaths, and if you still feel
energy surging through you, just visualize that excess energy draining
out of
your hands and feet back into the Earth.

COLOR CORRESPONDENCES
Yet another "domino" to align is color. It has long been known that
color radiations have a tremendous influence upon our health, thoughts,
and actions. It is therefore important to use the appropriate color of
candles, gemstones, etc. to further add power to your magick. The
following chart will give you a list of appropriate colors to use for
each day of the week. Please note that my list may differ from others
you have seen or read. Color use is basically an instinctual and
personal choice, and you will find that the more you work magick, the
more you will begin to rely on your own color choices for your workings.
In the meantime, please feel free to use the following chart as a guide:

Color/Moon Correspondence

The following is a list of color and planetary correspondences to assist
you in developing and working your spells...there are many variations to
this information depending on which magickal system you employ...these
are the particular days of the week and color symbolisms that I use and
that work for me...please feel free to change this information to fit
your particular needs

Monday (Moon) - White/Silver/Gray -- White is used to build purity,
sincerity, and truth; to repel negative energies and raise vibrations;
balance the aura, contact spirit guides, emotional healing, protection,
healing of children and pets, healing from the birth process, dreams,
ancestors, instinct, memory, virginity, child bearing, and theft. White
may also be used as an "all-purpose" color to substitute for any other
color. Gray and silver are used to cancel and neutralize spells which no
longer serve your purposes; also used to cause a stalemate in a
situation. Fragrances: Eucalyptus, Jasmine, Myrrh, Sandalwood.

Tuesday (Mars) - Red -- Lust, physical desire, courage, war, aggression,
enemies, pain, danger, energizing and stimulating, health, strength,
vigor, (sexual love -- cherry reds). Be careful when using the darker
reds, as they stand for wars, battles, blood, danger, and hate.
Fragrances: Carnation, Dragon's Blood, Ginger, Pine, Peppermint.

Wednesday (Mercury) - Orange -- Energy building, success, stimulation,
attraction, mental agility, attracts good luck and fortune, builds
vitality, energy, and stamina, encouragement, discourages laziness,
adaptability. Fragrances: Bayberry, Lavendar, Peppermint.

Thursday (Jupiter) - Purple/Royal Blue -- Expansion in all forms (love,
healing, wealth, etc.), magickal powers, desires, riches, honor, oaths,
changeability, impulsiveness. When working with expansion, make sure you
currently have the item or quality you wish to expand first. If not, use
another color to first obtain that item or quality, and then use purple
to expand...Fragrances: Nutmeg, Sage, Sandalwood.

Friday (Venus) - Green/Pink -- Green is used for fertility, luck,
finances, and healing. It attracts success and facilitates communication
with plants and faeries. Pink is for romantic, emotional, spiritual love
(usually without the sexual connotation). Pink raises vibrations,
facilitates spiritual healing, banishes negative vibrations and hate,
and promotes honor, morality, and unselfishness. Fragrances: Cherry,
Rose, Thyme, Vanilla.

Saturday (Saturn) - Black/Brown -- Black is used to absorb negativity,
remove obstacles, bad habits, unwanted emotions, etc. Also used to cause
confusion, discord, evil, and loss. It can be an extremely useful color,
but if used improperly, it can cause disaster!!! Brown is useful to
attract money by working with your hands, and can also connect and
ground you to Mother Earth. Fragrances: Iris, Pansy, Black Orchid,
Patchouly.

Sunday (Sun) - Gold/Yellow -- Gold is used to attract money and power,
to attract happy people to your life, to heal, to rejuvenate, to charm;
builds confidence, useful in persuasion; gives energy and intelligence
to make proper decisions in financial affairs. Yellow is used to gain
insight into problems, attract others, obtain knowledge and facilitate
retention of learning. Fragrances: Cedar, Clove, Cinnamon, Frankincense,
Rosemary.

In addition, I use blue in spells to ease stress and anxiety, calm and
soothe, bring health (especially emotional health), give peace,
patience, tranquility, and to promote understanding. I usually use light
blues on Mondays, and medium blues on either Wednesdays or
Thursdays...(use Lavendar or Sandalwood Fragrances).

Violet can be used successfully on either Wednesdays or Thursdays to
promote healing, bring peace, and increase spirituality...(Again, I use
Lavendar or Sandalwood Fragrances).


Creating Candle Magick


The best type of spell is one you have
created yourself. Remember, as much energy
as you put in your magick, is as much energy
as you'll get out. You may also wish to
enhance the effect with an appropriate scent
listed in our Magick Scents section and/or an
appropriate Gem or Stone and even an Herb.
There is also a corresponding color, day,
element and moon phase, all in which, not
really necessary, but will give added
enhancement and power to the magick desire.
All of these elements together will
manifest to one heck of a wish being
put out there upon the elements.

~*~

Now a perfect moon or day is not a
mandatory condition, neither are all
the rest of the enhancements.
Sometimes, just the simple act of
lighting of a candle will do. For
example, the in-laws are on their
way over. In order for the night to
go well and no tensions or worries for
the night, light a scented candle, perhaps
with Jasmine or Lavender and a pink or
Blue color too. This not only looks
very warm and inviting, but the candle
is sending out your wishes for a stress
free night and the scent is working
to calm and ease the tensions in the
room at the same time! Your mother-in-law
just may think you are okay after all
while the whole time you were
performing magick!!!!

In your magick journal or on parchment
paper list your goal, the intended result,
and a chant, prayer or poem for your spell.
For example if your goal is true love
and a marriage proposal, your magickal journal
(or parchment paper) may look like this:
GOAL: TRUE LOVE
INTENDED RESULT: Happiness, Marriage
CHANT: TRUE LOVE
FIND ME NOW
BRING WITH YOU
HAPPINESS AND MARRIAGE VOW
The whole time you are saying this, you
will be concentrating on the outcome of
the wish as you have envisioned it along
with the way in which it will be fulfilled.
Picture yourself with your desired results,
happy, in love, married, home, etc. Take
a few moments to do this make it a complete
picture in your mind. Then take your
candle (for this example a pink one)
place in an area so it will be undisturbed.
(Please use all precautionary actions
in this too. Remember safety of yourself
and others.) Determine the day of the week
(Friday for manifesting new love) and determine
the MOON (in this example, you will need a
WAXING MOON,"to bring".) Gather all your
energy, thoughts, concentration and picture
your desired results as you light your candle.
At this point you have now all the elements
of the magick working for you. There is
the Air, Water, Earth, Fire, Spirit and
Will that you have just released and
sent out. Stay thinking about this for
a few minutes more of uninterrupted thoughts.

At this time, you can see whether your
wish has or is having an effect by the
way in which the flame is behaving.
Study its movements and the speaking
it is doing. Remember to relate it to
the situation. If your candle goes out,
it may be telling you to try again on
another night when you can concentrate
a little more. Never relight the same
candle. The same is true if the candle
breaks or is broken. Do not use it
again. It is best to just use the one
you tried with for other nonmagickal
purposes and get a new one to try again.

Let the candle burn undisturbed until
extinguished. At this time too, take a
look and see if the melted wax from the
candle left you a message. See if you
can discern anything from the image the
melted wax left for you. Please, don't
be disappointed if you do not see anything
remarkable or even fairly recognizable.
A further message is not always necessary
and will not always be there. But when
one is, wow!, really neat and fun too!

When you are through, you can throw the
remains away or bury them outside in the
ground if you are so inclined. If you
have used a "petition card" (the wish
written on a piece of paper or actual
cards intended for this reason and burned
during the wish making), blow the ashes
to the wind in the appropriate direction
f your wish while at the same time,
thanking the elements for taking up
your wish and fulfilling what you
desire most. Your thoughts again,
at this time are highly tuned and
you must be careful in where they
are going to fly. Try to ground
yourself and your energies after
you have completed the task so that
the energies you produced can be
released to the elements in hopes
of fulfillment. Please do try most
to remember,
DO NO HARM TO YOURSELF NOR OTHERS.
You will find Candle Magick is a
wondrous and powerful tool.
